hello, world.

//design

Another new blog/journal. Yay!
At this very current moment in time, I should be working on my final project for 3rd year architecture studio, due next Wednesday. The brief is to design a whole development at a designated Auckland (New Zealand, if you didnt know) location and at a high density.

The unit for density would be DPH, which stands for dwelling per hectare. But since we are to be working with multi bedroom maisonettes, units and apartments, the unit HRH or habitable rooms per hectare would more accurately describe the density of our design.
(Habitable rooms) Any room used or intended to be used for sleeping, cooking, living or eating purposes. Enclosed spaces such as bath or toilet facilities, service rooms, corridors, laundries, hallways, utility rooms or similar spaces are excluded from this definition.

A WIP quick look at the apartments we are working with.

The brief is to create a high density (600-800 hrh) residential development in the suburb of Parnell without sacrificing too much from the quality of life = balancing quality of living with density.
The site is the main.. problem or difficulty, if you like. as it essentially is a steep valley.

A metre long 1:500 laser cut model of the given site at Parnell. Each card layer represents 1 real life metre.

You'd be surprised at how challenging this studio brief is. Even more so because we've only done ONE small scale residential project in my 3 years of studio here and ZERO development planning.

More on this next week after my hand in with more refined renders!
